One sentence, revised until it was true

On chosen: A tool arrives in a life the way a word arrives in a sentence. Something else could have gone there. Chosen keeps the person who put it there on the hook.
On carefully: Care is not slowness for its own sake. It is the willingness to reread, to notice the word that is nearly right, and to change it.
On someone: Everyone is nobody in particular. You cannot picture a face, so you cannot tell when you have failed. Someone can be disappointed, which is the whole point of writing it that way.

The revisions

Questions a careful writer asks about a sentence, asked instead about a thing you are about to build.

Who is this for, by name?

Not the target segment. A person you could call. If you cannot name one, you are writing to no one, and it will read that way.

What is it doing to their attention?

Every interface either holds attention or returns it. Decide which on purpose, because it will be one of them regardless.

What happens on the worst day?

Not the demo. The day it is down, the day the data is wrong, the day someone is scared and using it anyway. Design for that day and the good days take care of themselves.

Can they leave?

Export, delete, walk away and take the work with them. A tool that is hard to leave is not loved. It is sticky, which is a word we use so we do not have to say the other one.

What did you delete?

Good writing is mostly cutting. A product with no record of what it refused to ship has not been edited, only accumulated.

Would you show them the machinery?

If the ranking, the pricing, or the reason it did that would embarrass you in plain language, the problem is not the language.

Does it still work small?

A thing that only makes sense at a million users is not a tool. It is a business model wearing one.

Written to fill space

Growth is the reason, and the reason is not discussed
The default is on, and buried
Engagement counted, satisfaction assumed
Leaving is possible in principle
Features arrive; nothing ever departs

Written to be read

Someone needed it, and can say what for
The default is the kind thing, and reversible
Finished counted, not time spent
Leaving takes one afternoon and no email
Things are removed, and it is announced
The user is a person with a bad week

None of this is a standard anyone can certify. It is a habit, and habits are visible in the work whether or not they are declared. You can usually tell within a minute of using something whether anyone reread it.

The foundation this belongs to holds a lot of names like this one. They are not products. They are positions, written down early so they can be argued with.
